Mazina Schmidlin-Könz Switzerland, b. 1956
Galerie von Opel is delighted to present the work of Mazina Schmidlin-Könz, in collaboration with Museum Mater (Barcelona). The exhibition will be on view in our gallery from October 5 to November 9.
Mazina was born in Zernez, in the Lower Engadin, into a family of sgraffito masters, representing the third generation of this artistic tradition. She first studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in St. Gallen (1973–74) before continuing her education at the School of Design in Lucerne, where she trained as a textile designer, graduating in 1979.
Since 1982, Mazina has worked as a freelance artist, mastering a wide range of techniques. Her practice includes oil painting, reverse glass painting on paper and wood, and textile design. She is also deeply engaged in collaborations that integrate the arts into architecture, developing projects that combine wall paintings, sgraffiti, colored curtains, embroidery, mosaics, metal reliefs, and comprehensive color concepts for architectural structures.
Mazina’s work reflects both her roots in Engadin’s sgraffito tradition and her commitment to expanding artistic expression across multiple disciplines, bridging fine art, design, and built space.
